As the weather warms and beach season looms, many people are heading to the salon to get ready. But you may be surprised to learn about the health threats—from bacterial infections to ringworm—that hide in the most popular spa treatments. Health magazine’s Colleen Sullivan appeared on NBC’s Today show May 20 to share tips with hosts Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb on staying healthy while you’re getting pretty.
As the beauty and fashion editor of Health magazine, Sullivan advises millions of women on how to look and feel their best. In her regular column, “The Buzz,” she reports on what’s hot in the world of style. Sullivan joined Health in 1998 and created the fashion and beauty departments.
Sullivan makes frequent appearances as a beauty and fashion expert on a variety of television programs, including the Today show, The View, and Good Morning America.
Prior to joining Health, Sullivan worked as an editor at Vogue, Working Woman, and McCall’s. She has also freelanced at Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, W, and Brides.

As a salon owner I found much of the report as being misinformed. We have a pedicure unit with jets and we disinfect the jets by using cascade and bleach and hot water and run a clean cycle through the jets for at least 5 minutes, followed by a clean water rinse cycle. There is also a disinfectant for the brushes that the brushes soak in for a few minutes. Yes there are some dirty salons and spas out there, but there are plenty of clean places also.
Now that we have many salons, nails, and spas, that pop-up all over. Most I would not allow my hair cut. I cut my own hair, groom myself in my own bathroom. Some infections you get require doctors care. I would not risk it. Most people do not know how to properly clean.
